Happy at work?!?If you are surrounded by people who think dreading Mondays is the norm, it's little wonder you're searching the internet for that magical "dream job" that will sort out your problems. Luckily, there are scores of "Happiness at work studies" that tell you which are the happiest jobs. One of these is the City & Guilds Happiness Index (a UK yearly survey). According to this, the professions with the highest proportion of people who say they are happy at work are: 1. Hairdressers 2. Beauty Therapists 3. Early years/ Childcare 4. Doctor/Dentist 5. Plumber The unhappiest? Secretaries/PAs/Admin workers. So to be happy we should all become hairdressers. Right? I'm not so sure. Blake and Blake Recruitment come across many happy and job satisfied PAs/Secretaries/Administrators/Receptionists on a daily basis. Many who have worked within an office enviornment for many years. So we are stuck in an office all day, often with no face to face contact with the public, but surely that can sometimes be a good thing. A warm office in the winter or a cool office in the summer is surely better than the unpredictable weather conditions Bristol often experience. Maybe the office staff questioned in these surveys need a job change and not a career change. For example, the role of a PA can differ dramatically depending on the company, industry and environment. One job that suits one person might not suit another, but wouldn't life be boring if we all were the same!!! |
